The founding meeting of the Independent Press Association (API) took place on 12 July 1997. The Statute of API was approved on 20 August 1997, and on 29 September 1997 the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova registered the Public Association "Association of Independent Press" under number 0087.

The Statute of API has been amended several times, the last amendments being made at the General Assembly on 24 June 2021.
