Tools for Promoting and Monetizing Websites, Shared with Regional Newsrooms by International Experts

28 January 2020

Galina Komornikova provides consultations to the "Northern Observatory" team, Soroca

Between December 2019 and January 2020, five regional newsrooms enjoyed in-house consulting, provided by two international experts. Galina Komornikova, editor-in-chief of the publication Кurier.Sreda.Berdsk, visited Observatorul de Nord (Soroca), Albasat TV (Nisporeni) and LIK TV (Râbnița), and Serghei Kolotovkin, expert in newsroom management, multimedia and TV journalism, visited the local TV stations BAS TV and Drochia TV.

The in-house consultations represented the second stage of the School of Media Management and Publicity for Regional Media, carried out by the Association of Independent Press (API) in partnership with FOJO Media Institute of Sweden. During the consultations, the newsroom teams reviewed their economic activities, discussed how to enhance work efficiency, tools for diversifying income sources, including those obtained online, and possibilities for development and digital promotion of journalistic products, to ensure media outlet’s sustainability.

“Thanks to the consultations, we have made radical changes in our newsroom; we have put the website in the foreground and the newspaper after it. Discussions were held with each of our newsroom’s members, which helped us discover our mistakes as well as implement certain solutions. After the consultations, we made a number of changes to the main page of the website Observatorul.md, as suggested by the expert Galina Komornikova,” says Elena Cobăsneanu, director of Observatorul de Nord (Soroca). “The most interesting subjects were promotion of the website on the Internet and increasing the amount of publicity sales. There is no magic recipe in place for the efficient promotion of a website, however, the experts gave us many tips and we discovered many ‘secrets’ that will help us in our work,” says Tatiana Pantilei, general producer of the local TV station Albasat TV (Nisporeni). “Thanks to the consultations offered by the expert Serghei Kolotovkin, we have already started to produce short promos for the social media and to announce our TV reports in our main newscast, which helps us have more visibility and increase the number of views. We have also managed to learn about a new format of news planning on a local television,” explains Vera Bulgaru, director of the local TV station Drochia TV (Drochia).

The program’s experts appreciate the interests of the journalists and media managers in using innovative tools for enhancing the visibility of regional websites, thus ensuring the sustainability of regional media.

The School of Media Management and Publicity for regional media is held in Moldova for the first time by FOJO Media Institute of Sweden and the Association of Independent Press (API), with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
