The signatory organisations are following the situation surrounding the Alexandr Stoianoglo case very closely. The speed with which the criminal case against Mr. Stoianoglo was launched, the detention and the request for his arrest were carried out is surprising. The lack of information does not allow us to comment on the merits of the charges against Alexndr Stoianoglo, while we consider it imperative that prosecutors and courts show exemplary transparency and respect for legal provisions. We urge the prosecutors to make public relevant facts that will convince society that this case is not unfounded. We also hope that the courts, at least in this case, will thoroughly examine the arguments put forward by the prosecutors for the arrest and immediately release Alexandr Stoianoglo if there is the slightest doubt about their sufficiency. Moreover, there is concern about reports of alleged influence on the prosecutor and credible information that Alexandr Stoianoglo's lawyers are unable to communicate with him. Such practices are unacceptable in a state governed by the rule of law and we call for their immediate investigation. We urge judges and prosecutors not to accept political influence and political forces to refrain from politicising the case of Alexandr Stoianoglo. Justice must be exercised in the courtroom, not in the street or in political forums. We hope that this case is not used by prosecutors to take revenge, and that the High Council of Prosecutors will react appropriately to any misconduct by prosecutors.
