The Eastern Partnership National Civil Society Platform expresses its solidarity with EU Ambassador Peter MICHALKO and calls on political parties to stop turning European diplomats into political targets and instead focus on finding democratic solutions to solve the political crisis in the interest of citizens. The ȘOR party, through its fugitive MP Ilan ȘOR, and the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) have recently launched attacks on the EU Ambassador to Moldova, Peter MICHALKO, to distract attention from the undemocratic and unconstitutional manoeuvres they are making to preserve their power after Igor DODON's loss of the presidential elections. The two parties accuse the European diplomat of various positions he has taken and allege a so-called violation of the country's "sovereignty". In reality, this is a diversion: both the ȘOR party and the PSRM seem more concerned with securing for themselves a sovereign power to control state institutions, despite having lost the support of the electorate. Ambassador Peter MICHALKO spoke from the position of partnership and cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova. In addition to the Association Agreement with the EU signed by the Republic of Moldova in 2014, which includes a number of obligations on both sides, the EU is in a position of partnership in many other respects: Since 2009, the EU is the most important donor and development partner of the Republic of Moldova, contributing through Official Foreign Assistance with about 1.12 billion euros, resources that went directly into the state budget. In addition, technical assistance projects have been implemented for central and local public authorities, civil society and businesses. These investments have resulted in 700 kilometres of road, modern trolleybuses for Chisinau and Balti, access to drinking water for 16,000 people; thousands of jobs. The EU is Moldova's main trading partner, in 2020 the volume of exports to the EU accounted for 67% of Moldova's total exports. Cooperation with the EU and respect for European norms and values actually strengthens Moldova's sovereignty and its economic, social and democratic development.
